Metro by T-Mobile $0 iPhone 17 Deal USA 2026: I Got It Without an SSN - Step-by-Step

Note: This post is based on Metro by T-Mobile’s current "Free 5G Phone" promo running in June 2026. Deals change monthly. Call 1-888-8METRO8 to confirm before visiting a store.

I’ll be honest. I thought it was a scam.

A $0 iPhone 17? From Metro by T-Mobile? With no SSN and no credit check?

I live in Dallas. Last month my cousin’s iPhone 12 got stolen. She didn’t have the money for a new one. Credit score is 580. No SSN yet - she’s here on a work permit.

Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile all told her “$35 plan + $999 phone + SSN required.”

Then we saw the banner outside Metro: “iPhone 17 ON US. No Credit Check. Switch Today.”

I spent 20 days researching. Went to the store 3 times. Got rejected once. Then on June 9, 2026, she walked out with the phone. Paid $0 for it.

Here’s the whole story. Nobody on YouTube is telling you this part.

What Is the Metro $0 iPhone 17 Deal Actually? 2026 New Rules

Metro by T-Mobile runs a “Free 5G Phone” promo every year. For 2026, they finally added the base iPhone 17 to the list.

Here are the actual terms:

1. You have to port in a number - You must switch from another carrier. AT&T, Verizon, Cricket, Boost, Visible - all work. Google Voice doesn’t.

2. You need the $60/month plan - Metro Flex Unlimited Plus. It includes Amazon Prime for free.

3. The phone is locked for 12 months - You have to stay with Metro. In month 13 it unlocks for free.

4. You pay a $25 activation fee + tax - The phone is $0, but stores charge $25 + tax. Mine was $37 total in Texas.

So “Free” really means $37 on day one + $60 x 12 = $757 for the first year. Still not bad for a $1,199 phone.

No SSN? You Can Still Get Approved - Here’s Proof

Metro’s website says “Credit check required.” That’s not true for prepaid.

In-store they do a “Prepaid Verification.” For that you need one of these 3 things:

Option 1: ITIN Number. If you have an ITIN, you can use it instead of an SSN. 90% of reps won’t tell you this.

Option 2: Passport + Visa + 2 Proofs of Address. This is what we did. Indian passport, EAD work permit, bank statement, and electric bill. The manager approved it in 10 minutes.

Option 3: Matricula Consular Card. For customers from Mexico. They accept it.

“No credit check” means they don’t pull your Experian or Equifax report. They just verify your ID to make sure you’re a real person.

Step-by-Step: How I Got the iPhone 17 for $0 - June 9, 2026

Step 1: Get Your Old Number Ready to Port. You’ll need the Account Number + PIN. My cousin was on Visible. We got the “Transfer PIN” from the app. Took 2 minutes.

Step 2: Make a Folder with Your Documents. Store reps look at everything closely. We brought:
- Original Passport
- EAD Card / Work Permit
- Bank statement from last month with your address
- Electricity bill - name and address must match
- $40 cash - Cards sometimes don’t work at Metro

Step 3: Go to the Store at 11 AM. Evenings are packed and managers get cranky. I went at 6 PM the first time and he said “system is down.” It wasn’t. Go in the morning and you’ll get help.

Step 4: Ask Specifically for the “Free iPhone 17 Port-In Deal.” Don’t say “free phone.” They’ll hand you a Moto G. Ask for the exact model.

Step 5: Use Your ITIN or Passport for ID Verification. When they ask for an SSN, say “I don’t have an SSN, I have an ITIN” or “Can I use my passport?” 99% of stores will say yes. It’s corporate policy.

Step 6: Pay for the $60 Plan + $25 Fee. First month’s $60 + $25 activation + tax = $93 for us. The phone itself was $0.

Step 7: Wait 15 Minutes. They’ll port your number. They’ll open the iPhone 17 box, sealed, in front of you. They’ll activate it and hand it over.

3 Mistakes I Made - Don’t Do This or You’ll Get Denied

Mistake 1: Trying to Port a Google Voice Number. Metro doesn’t accept VoIP numbers. It has to be from AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, or Cricket. I tried GV first. Instant rejection.

Mistake 2: Address Mismatch on Documents. My bank statement said “Rd.” and the light bill said “Road.” The manager said “addresses don’t match.” Wasted 2 days. Had to go get a letter from the bank.

Mistake 3: Insisting on the $40 Plan. The free phone is only available on the $60 Flex Unlimited Plus plan. I argued for 30 minutes. Didn’t work. You have to take the $60 plan for 12 months.

What Are the Hidden Costs? Here’s the Real Math

Item Cost Note
iPhone 17 128GB $0 Must stay with Metro for 12 months
Activation Fee $25 One time, day one
Tax in Texas $12 8-10% depending on state
Plan for 12 Months $60 x 12 = $720 Amazon Prime included
Total 1st Year $757 vs $1,199 + $60x12 = $1,919 from Apple

You save $1,162 in the first year. After that the phone is yours. Stay with Metro or unlock it and switch to AT&T.

Metro vs Visible vs Boost: Who Gives a $0 iPhone 17 in 2026?

1. Metro by T-Mobile: $0 phone + $60 plan. No SSN needed. Must go to a store. 12-month lock.

2. Visible by Verizon: Doesn’t offer a $0 phone. Their $25/month plan + iPhone 17 costs $829 upfront. Requires SSN and credit check. 70% rejection rate.

3. Boost Mobile: Sometimes offers a $0.99 iPhone 17. But it’s a $70 plan + SSN + credit check. And a 36-month contract. You’re locked in for 3 years.

Winner: Metro. If you don’t have an SSN or your credit is bad, Metro is the only option in 2026.

When Does the Phone Unlock? How to Leave Metro

After 12 months of active service, the “Request Unlock” button appears in the Metro app. I unlocked my old Metro iPhone 13 in month 13. Took 2 minutes.

Once unlocked, it works on AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon. You can sell it too. It’ll go for $650 on Swappa after 1 year.

What if you leave before 12 months? You’ll owe the remaining balance on the phone. It’s $1,199 / 12 = $99 per month. If you leave after 6 months, you pay $99 x 6 = $594 on your final bill. That’s why finishing the 12 months is key.

Final Verdict: Should You Get This Deal in 2026?

Yes, if:
1. You don’t have an SSN or your credit score is under 600
2. You can keep the same number for 1 year
3. You can afford a $60/month plan - you get Prime anyway
4. You want a new iPhone but don’t have $1,200

No, if:
1. You like switching carriers every 6 months
2. Your old phone gets you $800 trade-in value at Apple
3. You want a cheaper $40 plan - this deal doesn’t allow it

For my cousin, this deal was a lifesaver. She got an iPhone 17 for $37. It’s been 2 months, everything works perfectly. 5G speeds hit 400 Mbps in Dallas.

Check Metro’s coverage in your area first. Go to metrobyt-mobile.com/coverage and enter your zip code. If you see “5G Ultra Capacity” then get it. If it’s only “4G LTE,” skip it.

Did you try Metro too? Did they approve you without an SSN or deny you? Drop a comment with your city and which store you used. It’ll help others.
