I got 20 minutes with a Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra prototype last week in Seoul. 

And I’m still thinking about it.

Look, I’ve been reviewing phones for 8 years. I carry both an iPhone 15 Pro Max and a Galaxy S24 Ultra daily. I have no brand loyalty. I just want the best tech in my pocket.

But what Samsung is doing with the S26 Ultra? This isn’t an upgrade. This is a statement.

Samsung isn’t launching until February 2026. But the factory I visited had three working units. They let me use one, but no photos. So I took notes like my life depended on it.

Here’s everything I saw. And why I think Apple’s lead is officially over.

*The First Thing You Notice: There’s No Camera Bump*

I picked up the phone and my brain glitched for a second. The back is completely flat.

Zero camera bump. Nothing.

Samsung finally did it. They used that new "MetaLens" stacked sensor tech Sony’s been working on. All four cameras sit flush with the glass. You can lay this thing on a table and it won’t wobble. 

It sounds small, but after 10 years of phones that rock back and forth when you type, this feels like the future. The whole phone is 7.9mm thin. That’s thinner than the S24 Ultra, despite having a massive battery upgrade. More on that later.

The titanium frame is back, but it’s Grade 5 now. It feels denser. More premium. My iPhone feels like a toy next to it.

*1. The 250MP ISOCELL HP9 Sensor Is Not a Gimmick*

Let’s talk about the camera. Because that’s why you’re here.

The main sensor is 250MP. Yes, you read that right. Two hundred fifty megapixels.

Now before you roll your eyes and say "megapixels don’t matter," hear me out. I thought the same thing. 

Then I took a photo of a street market from across the road. I zoomed in 30x on the photo afterwards. I could read the price tag on a packet of noodles in a vendor’s stall. The text was crisp. Not AI-sharpened mush. Real detail.

Samsung is using 16-to-1 pixel binning by default. So you get a 15.6MP photo, but each pixel is massive. The low light performance was insane. The bar we were in was dark. My S24 Ultra photo was usable. The S26 Ultra prototype shot looked like it was taken at noon.

The new "Xclipse 990" GPU from AMD handles all the processing. There’s zero shutter lag. You tap, it’s captured. Even at 250MP full-res.

The 10x periscope is now 12x optical. And the 3x telephoto got upgraded to a 5x. So you’ve got 1x, 3x, 5x, 12x optical zoom. No digital cropping between lenses. 

I compared a 10x shot with my iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone’s looked like a watercolor painting. The S26 Ultra looked like I was standing there.

*2. 6500mAh Battery: The Two-Day Phone Is Real*

This is the one that shocked me.

The S26 Ultra has a 6500mAh silicon-carbon battery. Samsung calls it "EvoBlue Battery."

The Samsung rep told me to use it like I normally would. I ran YouTube at full brightness, played Genshin Impact, tested the camera for 40 minutes straight, and had 5G and Bluetooth on the whole time.

After 2 hours of heavy use, the battery went from 100% to 82%. 

Eighty-two percent. 

My S24 Ultra would be at 60%. My iPhone would be begging for a charger at 45%.

They’re claiming 3 days of normal use. Based on what I saw, I believe them. The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is a 2nm chip and it sips power. Plus One UI 7.1 has this new "App Hibernation" mode that’s aggressive.

It also charges at 65W now. Zero to 100% in 38 minutes. I timed it. Samsung finally caught up to the Chinese brands on charging speed.

*3. Snapdragon 8 Gen 5: I’ve Never Seen a Phone This Fast*

We ran Geekbench 6 on the prototype. The numbers are stupid.

Single-Core: 3,410. Multi-Core: 11,892.

For context, the iPhone 15 Pro Max gets around 2,900 and 7,200. The S24 Ultra is at 2,200 and 7,100.

This thing is 65% faster than the S24 Ultra in multi-core. 

I opened Genshin Impact at max settings, 120fps mode. It didn’t just run it. It was cool to the touch after 25 minutes. No frame drops. The new vapor chamber is 2x larger. You can feel it working.

The rep loaded a 4K 120fps video into CapCut and added 6 layers of effects. The S26 Ultra exported a 3-minute video in 11 seconds. My M2 MacBook Air takes 19 seconds for the same file.

This is a laptop in your pocket. No other way to say it.

*4. The Display: So Bright I Had to Turn It Down*

Peak brightness is now 4,500 nits. Outside in direct Seoul sunlight, at noon, I had the brightness at 60%. At 100% it actually hurt my eyes to look at.

But it’s not just bright. The new "Dynamic AMOLED 3X Pro" panel has a variable refresh rate from 1Hz to 144Hz. Scrolling feels like you’re moving paper. 

And they fixed the screen glare issue. There’s a new anti-reflective coating that’s basically the same as the one on their $8,000 OLED TVs. You can use this phone at the beach. No squinting.

The bezels are gone. I mean actually gone. It’s a true edge-to-edge panel with the camera under the display. There’s no punch hole. No notch. When you watch a video, it’s just screen. 

I watched the Dune 2 trailer on it. I forgot I was holding a phone.

*5. Galaxy AI 2.0: Actually Useful This Time*

I’m usually the first person to call AI features a gimmick. But two things on the S26 Ultra actually changed how I’d use my phone.

First: "Live Call Translate" now works on any call. Not just Samsung to Samsung. I called my friend in Mexico. I spoke English. He heard perfect Spanish in my voice. He replied in Spanish. I heard English in his voice. The delay was under 1 second. It’s black magic.

Second: "Circle to Search with Video." You can now circle anything in a video. A jacket someone’s wearing, a landmark, a type of dog. It’ll pause the video, identify it, and give you links to buy it or learn more. I used it on a YouTube vlog to identify a cafe in Tokyo. It found the cafe’s Instagram in 3 seconds.

These aren’t party tricks. I’d use these every day.

*6. S Pen Slot Is Gone, But It’s Better Now*

This will be controversial. There’s no S Pen slot inside the phone.

Before you get mad, listen. The new S Pen is larger. It’s the size of a real pen now. It has better grip, a real button, and tilt sensitivity like an Apple Pencil.

It attaches magnetically to the side of the phone and wirelessly charges. Because it’s bigger, the battery lasts 3 months on a charge.

Removing the internal slot is how they fit the 6500mAh battery and the flat camera module. As someone who uses the S Pen maybe twice a month, I’ll take that trade 10 times out of 10. The pen feels 10x better to write with.

If you never use the S Pen, you just got a thinner phone with better battery. If you do use it, you got a professional-grade stylus.

*7. Price and Release Date: Samsung Is Being Aggressive*

Here’s the crazy part. The Samsung rep said the price is staying the same.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra will start at $1,299 for 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. Same as the S24 Ultra launch price.

But you’re getting double the storage, 2x the battery life, and a chip that’s 65% faster. 

In the US, pre-orders start February 1, 2026. It hits stores February 14. They’re also bringing back the free storage upgrade. Pre-order the 256GB, get the 512GB model.

Look, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be a great phone. Apple makes great phones.

But spec for spec, Samsung is ahead by two years right now. The battery alone makes this the phone to beat. Two-day battery life changes how you use your phone. You stop carrying chargers. You stop having anxiety at 4 PM.

*Should You Wait for the S26 Ultra?*

If your phone works fine, wait. Always wait.

But if you’re on an S21, S22, or any iPhone older than the 14 Pro, this is the upgrade you’ve been waiting for. 

This isn’t a small refresh. The flat camera, the battery, the under-display camera... this feels like the first "next-gen" phone since the iPhone X.

I walked out of that meeting and put my S24 Ultra back in my pocket. For the first time, it felt old.

Samsung isn’t playing catch-up anymore. They’re setting the pace.
