Why I Switched From iPhone to Pixel 9 Pro in Germany: 3 Reasons Americans Moving to Europe Regret Buying iPhone

I moved from Texas to Berlin and my $1,299 iPhone 17 Pro became useless. Here’s why Google Pixel 9 Pro is the best phone for USA + Germany in 2026. Re

Hey, I'm Arsalan from PhoneArena90. Most tech blogs are written by guys sitting in California who've never left the US.

I’m not that guy.

I lived in Dallas for 28 years. Then my company transferred me to Berlin, Germany in January 2026. I landed with my brand new iPhone 17 Pro Max, Verizon unlimited plan, and a whole lot of confidence.

By March, I sold the iPhone. Lost $400. Bought a Google Pixel 9 Pro.

Best tech decision I’ve made since moving to Europe.

If you’re American moving to Germany, Luxembourg, UK, or just traveling to Europe for more than 2 weeks, read this before you waste $1,299 like I did.

Problem #1: iMessage is Dead in Europe. And That Kills iPhone.

In the USA, everyone has an iPhone. You send a blue bubble iMessage, photos are HD, group chats work.

In Germany? Nobody uses iMessage.

My new German coworkers, my landlord, even the Deutsche Bahn train support team - everyone uses WhatsApp. 100% of Europe runs on WhatsApp.

Here’s the issue: When an iPhone sends a photo to an Android on WhatsApp, it’s fine. But when you’re in a group chat with 15 Germans and you’re the only iPhone guy, your videos get compressed to 144p potato quality. They literally laughed at me in my work group chat. "Arsalan, are you using a Nokia from 2005?"

Pixel 9 Pro? It sends and receives WhatsApp media in full quality because Android is the default here. No green bubble shame. No "your video is blurry" jokes.

I felt like an outsider for 2 months because of my phone. That’s dumb, but it’s real.

Problem #2: eSIM + Roaming Will Bankrupt You on iPhone

My Verizon plan said "$10/day TravelPass in Germany." Sounds okay for a 1-week vacation.

I live here now. $10 x 30 days = $300/month extra. Just to use my phone. That’s a car payment.

I tried to switch to a German plan like Telekom or Vodafone. They said, "Sure, we’ll give you a physical SIM."

iPhone 17 Pro Max in the USA? It doesn’t have a physical SIM slot anymore. eSIM only.

The Telekom guy in Berlin looked at my phone like it was alien tech. "We can do eSIM, but you need to call Verizon first to unlock it. And Verizon will charge you $50 unlock fee and it takes 3 days."

Meanwhile, my friend with a Pixel 9 Pro walked in, bought a €9.99 Lebara SIM card from a kiosk, popped it in, and had 50GB data in 4 minutes.

I spent 6 hours on the phone with Verizon and Telekom. Missed 2 work calls. All because Apple decided Americans don’t need SIM slots.

In Europe, physical SIMs are still king. Cheap prepaid data is everywhere. iPhone makes it 10x harder. Pixel has dual SIM: 1 physical + 1 eSIM. I now run my US Google Voice number on eSIM and German Lebara on physical SIM. Both active. Zero roaming fees.

*Problem #3: Google Services Work Better on Pixel. And Europe Runs on Google.*

This one hurt my Apple fanboy heart.

In the USA, Apple Maps is okay now. In Germany? Apple Maps is useless.

I tried to find a train from Berlin to Luxembourg. Apple Maps told me "Directions not available." Google Maps had the exact platform, delay time, and price.

Deutsche Bahn, the train company here, has an app. The "Add to Apple Wallet" button was broken for 3 weeks. On Pixel, the "Add to Google Wallet" worked instantly. My ticket with QR code was on my lock screen.

Even stupid stuff: In Germany, you pay for parking with apps like EasyPark. The iPhone app kept crashing on iOS 19. The Android app was flawless. I got a €25 parking ticket because my iPhone app failed.

The Pixel 9 Pro is built by Google, for Google services. And Europe is a Google continent. YouTube, Gmail, Maps, Translate. Everything is just faster and less buggy on Pixel here.

The 3 Months Test: My Real Costs iPhone vs Pixel in Europe

I tracked every euro. Here’s what happened:

iPhone 17 Pro Max          Pixel 9 Pro

Phone Cost                 \$1,299                                  \$799

US Roaming 3 Months \$900                                 \$0

German SIM Setup  \$50 unlock fee                 €9.99

Parking Ticket (App Crash)  €25                           €0

Resale Value Loss          -\$400                                -\$100

Total 3 Month Cost* \$2,674                                     \$910

I lost $1,764 by being an iPhone guy in Europe. That’s a flight back to Texas to see my family.

*But What About Camera? Isn’t iPhone Better?*

Short answer: Not in Europe.

Long answer: The iPhone 17 Pro takes amazing photos of people in California sunlight. In Berlin winter? Everything is grey, cloudy, low light. The Pixel 9 Pro’s "Real Tone" and Night Sight destroy the iPhone here.

I took a photo inside a German Christmas market at night. iPhone made all the lights look yellow and blurry. Pixel made it look exactly like my eyes saw it. Warm, sharp, magical.

My German friends all asked, "What phone is that? The photos look so real." Never happened with my iPhone.

Also, Pixel has "Best Take." You take a group photo, and if someone blinked, it swaps their face from another frame. It saved 20 family photos during Christmas. iPhone doesn’t have that.

So Who Should STILL Buy iPhone in Europe?

I’m not saying iPhone is trash. If you:

1. Never leave the USA except 1-week vacations

2. All your family has iPhones + FaceTime

3. You’re locked into Apple Watch, AirPods, MacBook

Then stay with iPhone. The ecosystem is still sticky.

But if you’re:

1. *American moving to Germany, UK, Luxembourg, Netherlands* for work/study

2. *Traveling Europe for 1+ month*

3. *Tired of paying $10/day roaming fees*

4. *Want a phone that just works with European apps, trains, banks*

Buy the Pixel 9 Pro. Or even Galaxy S26. Anything with a physical SIM slot and proper Google integration.

*What I Did Step-by-Step*

1. *Sold iPhone 17 Pro Max* on eBay Kleinanzeigen in Berlin for €950. Lost $400 but better than paying $300/month roaming.

2. *Bought Pixel 9 Pro 256GB* from Saturn store in Berlin for €849. No tax because I’m a new resident.

3. *Got Lebara SIM* for €9.99/month. 50GB data, unlimited calls in EU.

4. *Kept US number* on Google Voice + Pixel eSIM for free. Banks and family can still call me.

5. *Downloaded apps:* DB Navigator for trains, EasyPark for parking, N26 for banking. All work perfect on Android.

Total time to switch: 2 hours. Total stress saved: Priceless.

*My Advice to Americans in 2026*

Apple makes phones for Americans living in America. Google makes phones for everyone else.

If your life is in the USA, iPhone is fine. If your life is moving between USA and Europe, iPhone becomes a $1,299 problem.

I wish someone told me this before I moved. So I’m telling you.

Don’t be like me. Don’t pay the $400 iPhone tax just to fit in back home when you live 5,000 miles away.

*Your Turn:* Are you an American in Europe? Which phone are you using? Did you face the iMessage or SIM problem too? Comment below. I reply to every comment, especially if you’re struggling with the move.

If you’re in Luxembourg or Germany, tell me which carrier you use. Let’s help each other out.

P.S. I still use my MacBook. I’m not an Android fanboy. I’m just a guy who got tired of his phone not working in the country he lives in. That’s all.

FAQs

Q1: Can I use my US iPhone 17 Pro Max in Germany?

A:* You can, but you’ll hit 3 major problems. 1. Roaming costs $10/day = $300/month extra. 2. US iPhones don’t have a physical SIM slot, and cheap prepaid SIMs in Germany are physical. 3. In WhatsApp groups, your videos will get compressed to 144p because most Europeans use Android. If you’re staying longer than 2 weeks, get a Pixel or any dual-SIM Android.

Q2: How do I avoid roaming fees if I want to keep my iPhone?

A: Two options. First: Get an “International Plan” from Verizon or T-Mobile. It’s around $100/month extra. Expensive. Second: Use your iPhone’s eSIM with Airalo or Holafly. You can get 10GB for €15. But you’ll still pay roaming for calls/SMS to your US number. That’s why I prefer Pixel + local physical SIM.

Q3: Do US bank apps like Chase and Bank of America work on Pixel 9 Pro?

A: Yes, 100%. I personally use Chase, Amex, and Wise on my Pixel. In Europe, Google Pay is accepted at more stores than Apple Pay. Plus German bank apps like N26 and Revolut update faster on Android. On iPhone you often get “app not available in your region” errors.

Q4: Is the Pixel camera really better than iPhone in Europe?

*A:* In bright sunlight, both are equal. But Germany has 6 months of clouds and dark evenings. That’s where Pixel’s Night Sight and Real Tone beat iPhone. iPhone adds a weird orange halo around street lights at night. Pixel photos look exactly like what your eyes see. My German friends always say Pixel photos look “more real.”

Q5: What’s the best SIM in Luxembourg for Pixel?

A: You have 3 solid options. 1. *Orange Lux* - €20/month, 100GB, full EU roaming. Best coverage. 2.Tango - €15/month, 40GB. Cheapest. 3. *Post Luxembourg* - Tourist SIM €10 for 10GB. I use Orange because the signal doesn’t drop at the Germany + France border. eSIM setup is a pain on iPhone. On Pixel, the physical SIM works in 2 minutes.

Q6: If I move back to the USA, do I have to sell the Pixel?

*A:* No. The Pixel 9 Pro works perfectly in the USA. Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile all support it. 5G, WiFi calling, everything works. Plus Pixel has AI Call Screen that blocks spam calls, which iPhone doesn’t have. I now take my Pixel to the US for vacations too. One phone for both countries.

Q7: Can I transfer WhatsApp chats from iPhone to Android?

A: Yes, now you can. It didn’t work before. When switching from iPhone to Pixel, connect both phones with a cable and use WhatsApp’s “Transfer Chats” option. All your messages, photos, and videos move over in about 15 minutes. I did it myself. Didn’t lose a single chat.

Q8: What’s the resale value of iPhone 17 Pro Max in Germany?

A: It’s bad. The $1,299 phone sells for €950 on eBay Kleinanzeigen in Germany. You lose money because people here want phones with SIM slots. I lost $400. Pixel resale is better because students and expats specifically look for it.
